Mrs Green (as I knew her) was my godmother's mother. Lily Green lived in 75 Walton Street, Oxford (not exactly an upmarket area). During the First World War Lily worked at the 3rd Southern general Hospital Oxford (in the Town Hall). I am not sure that she was a nurse. Lily kept an autograph book from 1912 all through her life. There are numerous poems, sketches and autographs from patients (wounded soldiers), colleagues including nurses, as well as family and friends. At the time of the War Miss Green, as she was then, lived at 24 New Inn Hall Street, Oxford. I remember Mrs Green as feisty. She was salt of the earth, and down to earth. She was a small lady, and she had a husky voice (probably a result of heavy smoking!)

George Palmer
Description
Gunner George Palmer (10227, B Battery Royal Field Artillery, 78th Brigade, part of the 17th Division of the British Army) enlisted in Oxford on 1 September 1914. He was born in Wiltshire where his father was a gardener at Zeals House but enlisted in Oxford because he was working as a gardener there. Like so many others, he enlisted on 1 September 1914.

After training, he was first posted to the front on 12 July 1915. He was first involved around the Ypres Salient in 1915, and later the Battle of the Somme, including the battle of Albert and the battle of Delville Wood. In 1917 he was involved in the Arras offensive, including the two battles of the Scarpe and the two battles at Passchendaele. He was victim of a gas attack at Passchendaele during the second battle on 6 November 1917.

He returned to Britain on 19 November 1917 and married Florence Alberta Morgan on 23 August 1918. She kept many of his postcards home as well as other ephemera from the war, such as silk postcards and a silk handkerchief holder - the kind of thing many soldiers brought home for their sweethearts. He later joined the London and Tyne Electrical Engineers (serial number 366126) before he was transferred to Army Reserve on 14 May 1919.

He was my grandfather and died in 1958. His son, Mostyn, was later a soldier in the 89 Light Aircraft Regiment in World War II, including Operation Overlord and the Normandy landings.

This story and additional photographs can also be found in the Europeana 1914-1918 collection.

Description
(Made available through the First World War Poetry Digital Archive)
Recruiting march and presentation to Princess Mary of the Women's Land Army, Oxford, 1917-1918. The march begins in St Giles with women entering the enrolment hut by the Martyrs' Memorial. The procession goes down the Cornmarket, through Carfax and into Broad Street. Some of the women are in uniform, and the procession includes a steam tractor. Mr R E Prothero, Minister of Agriculture, leads local city and university officials to Trinity College gardens, where Princess Mary presents awards to the Land Girls. One of the girls shows two baby lambs. The awards continue while the members of the council and the university, one in a Bath chair, watch.

Description
(This was originally shared through the Great War Archive)

In the group, at the back is William Joss (in, I think, Gordon Highlanders) visiting Oxford to congratulate his eldest son, also William, on the right, who had just qualified as a doctor, who then went on to join the RAMC and was awarded the MC in North Africa. On retirement, he became a GP in Nottingham for the rest of his life. The son on the left is Bert, my father, - note second photograph - who was born in 1901 and joined the Scottish Horse in 1916. He was too young and his father got him a discharge, but soon after, Bert joined the Royal Engineers as shown in this uniform in the first photograph. He served in Ypres, where he was buried alive in a trench shelter for four days before being dug out and recovered. Back in the UK he was convalescent, then sent to Middle East where he proudly claimed that he marched into Jerusalem under General Allenby. Back home he went into the postal service. He never claimed his medals. I do so wish he had so that I might treasure them. If of any consequence, I served in the RAF as a Rear Gunner on Lancasters and my son served in both the Army and the Air Force in various parts of the world. I hope all this is clear, and best wishes for the project.
